wow peek
This is a bit late, because the product isn’t being sold anymore. But I thought I’d share this idea of turning WOW Money by Katsuya Masuda and Lloyd Barnes into a peek device. If you have it by chance, try this out. It’s pretty cool. When I had this idea at the start of this year, I realized it was the only device I knew of that lets you control the peek by activating and deactivating it as needed.
You can construct this fairly quickly. You’ll need a dollar bill, scissors/x-acto knife, double stick tape, blank business cards, and writing utensil.
First, use the device as guide to fold and cut the bill like this:
Make sure the back matches the “bill” in the device. Then insert the folded bill into the sleeve in the correct orientation:
Place a piece of double stick tape behind the bill where the red dotted rectangle indicates in the pic above. This is so that the bill doesn’t shift when the business card is inserted. I’d dab the double stick tape on cloth a few times so it’s a little less sticky. And make sure when inserting the card that it doesn’t poke out the other side. A standard business card should fit perfectly.
You don’t get a full peek, but I think the window is large enough that it’s not a huge issue. You can draw a line to help guide their writing.
And that’s it! Looks like this when activated and deactivated:
You can show both sides and activate the peek when you see fit, then deactivate it right after. You can even use their hand to deactivate as you set it down in their hand. Just playing around with it feels super sneaky.
The only thing missing from this is context. It’s a pretty weird device, so there’s gonna be a ton of heat on it. I wonder what else would make sense instead of a dollar bill. Lloyd mentioned that he hit up Masuda to get this version made. So, maybe he’ll be up for making one that makes more sense contextually. Or if this money version can be built into a wallet type thing so it kinda makes more sense to have a bill in there.
I think it can kinda feel like a slim wallet by itself though. I got a couple cards, an extra bill, and a credit card to fit decently without it being too bulky.
I saw that Clarity by Chris Rawlins came out recently. But it’s massive and more for stage/parlor. I bought WOW Money discounted when Ellusionist was having a sale with this idea in mind. In retrospect, I should have gotten a few more.
